MELBOURNE | The Mount Erica Hotel is one of the oldest licensed venues in Prahran, and has been operating as such since 1853. It’s been through plenty of iterations over the years, the most recent resulting from a 2017 refurbishment by owners Matt Vero, Will Benjamin and Cal Hitchens (Marquis of Lorne, Union House). The historic exterior is pure Victorian era pub, while the interior is a modern interpretation of the classic pub. Existing heritage elements have been restored where possible, resulting is a place that feels old and new. The main bar, a dining room, and lounge section mean you’ve got some good variety depending on your mood.

For food it’s all about modern Australian pub dishes with a European and Middle Eastern twist. The menu is split into several sections – Bar Food, Counter Meals, Steaks and Rotisserie, and features dishes that will please those looking for a traditional pub meal and those looking for something different or lighter. Think beer battered fish and chips, half chook with crushed potatoes, feta & sauce vierge, falafel with tomato, cucumber and mint salad, and six different kinds of steak.

For drinks its 12 beers across 30 taps serving a selection of local and, for the most part, independent craft beers, along with the usual commercial lagers. The wine list is very decent too and features plenty of great options from the accessible to the quirky. For those looking for something else, there’s also a decent spirits and cocktail list, including four rotating cocktails on tap.

Overall the team at Mount Erica have done a good job updating this classic venue. It’s got a great atmosphere and is the kind of place that welcomes anyone. Whether you want to watch the footy while enjoying a parma and lager, or sip on an orange wine while enjoying a frekeh salad, or something in between, you’re sorted.
