MELBOURNE | Named after the founder of Brunswick,Mr Wilkinson Brunswick East is one of the stalwarts of drinking options in this part of town, having opened back in 2008. Despite the ever changing and expanding food and drink scene in this part of town, Mr Wilkinson (or “Mr W” as locals call it) can still hold its own as one of the best options in the area for a drink.
The reason for this is that it gets the basics right. The space is warm and cozy, and uses a lot of recycled timbers and steel, which hearkens back to its past incarnation as a knitting mill. Recent times have seen the bar expand next door, into the equally cozy space formerly occupied by the unfortunately short lived Raconteur. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and there’s a real local’s vibe to the place. The drinks list is short and sweet, featuring both familiar and unusual spirits, a rotating selection of local and international wines, and a few beers on tap and in bottles.
There’s a decent assortment of thin crust pizzas that all come in at under $20, and if it’s something else you’re after, there are also things like meatballs, chips, cheese and charcuterie are also available. It’s all tasty stuff that’s well suited to eating with drinks.
