PERTH | Mrs. S Maylands is a cafe that’s built up quite the reputation in recent years due to consistently high quality of its food and cute, casual space. Menus are attached to Little Golden Books that instantly bring back childhood memories and there’s a whimsical innocent feeling to the entire venue – a large communal table, flowers, figurines and cookbooks.
Mrs. S describes the food it serves as “things your Granny made, only a little more frisky (and seasonal)” and it’s an apt description. Think cornbread, bacon, poached eggs and maple syrup, or crowd favourite (and our favourite) the super tasty and texturally complex “Manwich” which consists of pulled pork, beetroot pickle, cucumber, rocket in ciabatta bread.
If you can’t decide what you want, there’s always the option of the filling and varied “Mrs. S Breakfast Plate” which contains a toasted bagel and jam, perfectly gooey boiled egg, granola, yoghurt and compote, manchego, hummus, seasonal fruit and tomato relish!
The house made cakes and pastries are excellent too. The lemon tart is fantastically tangy and not overly sweet, and the cupcakes have the perfect balance between flavour and sweetness. We’ve heard great things about the Cheesecake brownie too, but alas have yet to try it.
Coffee is fantastic (if you want a milky coffee, silky smooth Bannister Downs milk is used), and we challenge you to pay a visit and not walk away with one of the delicious cakes to eat later on in the day.
