LONDON | Nancy Lam’s Enak Enak is a proper local’s restaurant in Battersea, and for over 30 years has been serving up authentic Indonesian-inspired cuisine along with a number of Thai dishes. Enak enak means delicious in Indonesian, and it’s a more than appropriate term to describe the family-style, Indonesian-inspired cooking coming out of the kitchen here.
The restaurant is decorated colourfully – tables are covered in batik cloth (traditionally-dyed materials), and photographs of owner and celebrity chef Nancy Lam with a variety of famous people adorn the walls. We think it’s fantastic that despite her fame, Lam has kept true to her roots in serving traditional home-style food in an understated, family run venue.
Everything, right down the the sauces, is made from scratch on site, using fresh, locally sourced produce and ingredients where possible. Dishes are cooked to a level of heat that they would be in Indonesia, but customers are able to request more or less heat when ordering. For those looking for a drink, Enak Enak offers up a good selection of wine, as well as tasty tropical mocktails.
Our favourite way to start a meal at Enak Enak is with the BBQ pork spare ribs, which are cooked over charcoal and served with a sweet and spicy chilli sauce. The ribs are a perfect example of how the best ingredients can make all the difference in a dish – the ribs are marinated until tender, have a beautiful char flavour, and the chilli sauce is mouth watering good. Another great starter is the famous Chicken Satay, served with the most divine peanut sauce, the recipe of which was passed down to Lam by her grandmother.
For mains, the Sambal Prawns are a great choice. The peeled sea prawns are served with sambal (Indonesian chili paste) and Gado Gado, an Indonesian salad of potatoes, cabbage, egg, bean sprouts, and peanut sauce. The sambal is of a medium heat, not quite as intense as Malaysian sambal, and has a great balance between spice and flavour. Two side dishes that are a must try here are the classic Nasi Goreng (spicy fried rice with sea prawns), and Celebration Mee (egg noodles with fresh vegetables & sea prawns, chicken and cashew nuts). Both portions are generously sized and we consider them to be amongst the best fried rice and fried noodle dishes we’ve eaten in London.
We can’t believe that it took us so long to visit Enak Enak and will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu, including dishes like Beef Rendang and Assam Chicken.
