MELBOURNE | Napoleone Brewery & Ciderhouse is a great space for lovers of craft beer and cider, with the beer being brewed on site, in the room right behind the bar. The space is an old 1860s dairy and feels very rustic, retaining all of the good stuff from the original building like high ceilings, exposed beams and concrete. Thoughtful renovations include the addition of a massive glass window which gives visitors sweeping views of the Yarra Valley.
Head Brewer Ben Waymouth is a fan of traditional central European styles of beer, and amongst the seven beers and three ciders on tap, you’re likely to find a few interesting seasonal or one off brews along with a selection from the core range. The year-round German-style Helles lager along with the Saison Duval are two of our favourites here, and the smokey Rauchbier is well worth trying if it’s available. For cider, make sure you try the Methode Traditionnelle Pear Cider, which is released on a limited basis Napoleone’ winemakers and is true to the traditional French style you don’t see that often in Australia.
Once you’re done sampling beers and ciders, head over to Meletos, which is actually the restaurant in the same room that you see behind the bar. Head Chef Neil Cunningham has created a menu that features, where possible, produce grown by small producers in the Yarra Valley. Cheese comes from Yarra Valley Dairy, pasta from Yarra Valley Pasta, and meat from Yarra Valley Game Meats, Yeringberg and Tom’s Paddock. The restaurant is a casual space, with food like salumi, pizza, pasta and roasted meats on offer. It’s simple, fresh, tasty stuff. The wine list is unsurprisingly local, with an emphasis on wines from the Yarra Valley, including the Napoleone family’s Punt Road wines.
Our recommendation is to visit at 11am on a Saturday morning, when Waymouth conducts tours of his working brewery followed by a private tasting. One you’re done, it’ll be time for lunch.
