Near & Far, Fitzroy

MELBOURNE | Near & Far is the newest craft beer bar/store to open in Fitzroy and in the short time that it’s been open, the bar’s already built up quite the following. It’s owned by Jason Cameron and Mike Hildebrand, who both have experience working in bars in Australia and overseas.

Cameron owns Maverick Imports, and has been importing craft beer from some of the world’s most highly regarded breweries for a few years now. Brands like Cloudwater, Tiny Rebel, Modern Times. There’s 18 taps to choose from, featuring core range, limited, and special beers from local and overseas breweries. It’s a place for lovers of craft beer, but it’s also pretentious – there’s always a few taps dedicated to easily accessible beers.

As well as beer there’s also wine and cocktails, with a wine focus on local, interesting drops. If there’s nothing on tap that suits your fancy, there over 150 beers and wines to choose from in the fridges and walk in cool room, all stored at the correct temperature, to enjoy in the bar or to take home with you.

The long, narrow space features exposed brick walls, green tiles, booths, and leather bar stools. The space looks quite small when you walk in, but as well as the downstairs section there’s two rooms upstairs with comfy furniture and a retro, 1980s feel.

There’s no kitchen on site (what was the kitchen in the former restaurant is now home to the fridges and cool room), but you can order in your own food from any one of the area’s nearby restaurants.

Paul founded The City Lane back in 2009 as a place to share photos of his travels around Europe with friends and family. The City Lane might have changed quite a lot since those early days but one thing that’s remained constant is Paul’s passion for food, travel and culture, and a desire to photograph and write about his experiences. Paul has a strong inquisitive nature that drives him to look beneath the surface in order to discover what really makes a city and its people tick, and what better way to do this than over a good meal or drink, with a city’s locals, at places that people who live in that city actually frequent. Paul is also a co-host of The Brunswick Beer Collective, a podcast that may or may not actually be about beer.
