MELBOURNE | Neo Lemonade is a sophisticated and stylish cafe and bar that has recently opened its doors in Victoria Harbour, Docklands. We were recently invited to check out contemporary Australian menu, and were interested to see what the venue could add to this oft misunderstood part of Melbourne.
Neo Lemonade is named after the owner Steven Belkovski’s children, Leo and Lennon who, unable to pronounce each other’s names when young, nicknamed each other Neo and Lemon. This friendly family strand can be found throughout the venue, with friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere suited to a post-work drink, weekend couples brunch, or a family dinner.
The two level space is perfect for entertaining and functions, with minimalist, modern décor and thoughtfully placed artwork. The chairs are comfortable, and the ambiance is inviting. We visited on a stormy Melbourne evening, and we were thankful to be in such a welcoming venue while making our way through the delicious menu.
By day, Neo Lemonade serve coffee using beans from one of our favourite Melbourne roasters, Padre, an assortment of non-traditional lattes, and breakfast on the go, such as Eggs Your Way and Neo Granola. It’s a perfect place to grab breakfast before a busy day at the office. The lunch and dinner menu is decadent and curated to appeal to a range of tastes, with an assortment of light and heavy dishes.
We sampled the Wagu Beef Burger, made with cold smoked bacon, gruyere, lettuce, tomato, mustard and a side of chips. The dish is simple and prepared perfectly. We also recommend the Red Snapper fillet, which is served in a bed of fish broth, broad beans, finger lime and nasturtium.
For dessert, you can’t go past the house made ice-cream or the peaches – a delightful dessert made from crème fraiche ice-cream, soft meringue and coffee.
The cocktails are fashionable and creative. There is a neo-twist on each of the cocktails on the menu, along with a few classics. Definitely try the Aviation, made with with gin, maraschino liqueur, crème de violette, and lemon juice. If you’re not after wine, there’s also a great choice of local and imported wines, along with a few beers. If you are just feeling peckish and want to relax with a drink in hand, you can sit by the bar and enjoy the urbane bar menu from 5:00pm onwards.
