MELBOURNE | Neon Beatniks is a Brunswick cafe from husband and wife team Richard and Kirsten Taylor (Hopper & Joe), and brings a creative menu full of produce driven breakfast and lunch offerings to the table. The space is deceptively small, when you walk through the front door you might be mistaken for thinking that it only seats those who can fit on the communal table in front of the coffee counter, and the tables and chairs outside, but it actually extends a fair bit back through the building. It’s a monochrome fitout, with black and white tiles, white brick, polished concrete, clean surfaces and sleek lines. An assortment of plants throughout ensure that the modern space never feels too cold.

The all female kitchen is headed up by chef Kate Hale (ex Red Door Corner Store) and features a selection of dishes that feel familiarly ‘Melbourne’ with an international flavour inspired by her travels. We’re big fans of the dahl fritters served with avocado and turmeric puree and coconut sambal, while the  kimchi bowl is another winner. It’s full of rice, sticky pork belly, fried eggs, kimchi, broccolini, coriander, ginger & fried enoki mushrooms.

Coffee comes from Mailing Room, with a colour coordinated San Remo ‘Cafe Racer’ espresso machine resulting in consistently fantastic espresso based drinks. Non-espresso drinks and non-traditional lattes as well as fresh juices are also available.

Before you leave, make sure you get one of the cookie sandwiches to go. The peanut butter cookies sandwiched together with maple butter cream and bacon jam are divine.
