HOBART | The New Sydney Hotel is one of those pubs that’s all to hard to find around Australia these days – a place that’s managed to evolve with the times while retaining all that makes a proper old school pub so special. The building dates back to 1835 and, apart from a few years where it was used as a private residence, and some years later a brothel, it’s operated as a pub. Walk inside and it feels like a classic old pub, with warming lights, cozy furniture, a fireplace, and wood panelled walls dotted with assorted vintage and kitsch items. When we visited on a cold winter’s day the pub was full of people singing boisterously to the sounds of live Irish music.

Upon further inspection however, this is no ordinary old pub that’s remained frozen in time. On the 15 taps, alongside stalwart Guinness, you’ll find a rotating selection of craft beers from Tasmania and the rest of Australia. There are lagers and ales, stouts and sours, ciders and IPAs. Very decent wine and spirit lists round things off nicely. Order whatever you feel like, and you won’t be judged here.

The menu too, straddles old and new, with pub classic like chicken parmigiana, fish & chips, and steak sharing the menu with things like a Korean chicken burger, hazelnut & beetroot gnocchi, and artichoke & mushroom risotto. Head chef Klee Clemens, does the pub classics right and unpretentiously, while adding creative flair (he spent time working at Melbourne’s Vue du Monde) to other dishes. There’s even an option of a tasting menu for those looking to more fully explore Clemens’ creative side.

It’s a hard task, updating a venue to satisfy modern trend while staying true to the ethos of a venue and retaining customers who don’t want anything to change, but at the New Sydney Hotel, it’s been achieved. There truly is something for everyone here and one look around revels a diverse crowd from all walks of life, socialising and enjoying a good time.
