Nicholson River Winery, Nicholson

NICHOLSON | Nicholson River Winery was started in 1978 by social worker Ken Eckersley and his wife, nurse Juliet Eckersley. The duo had a passion for wine, and couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the Gippsland Lakes and South-West France.

The wine at Nicholson River Winery is inspired by the great European styles, namely French wines. You’ll find varieties like Semillon, Chardonnay, and Shiraz, that reflect the character of the region. All of the wines are made small batch, and are for the most part sold direct at the cellar door or online.

When you visit the cellar door, you can enjoy a tasting, as well as glasses and bottles of new and vintage releases. For food, it’s a simple offering of local cheese and antipasto platters.

Space inside for tastings is limited, so do book in advance if you can. Once you’ve got what you want, you can head outside if the weather is nice and enjoy your wine with sweeping views of the vines and beautiful countryside that the winery overlooks.

Paul founded The City Lane back in 2009 as a place to share photos of his travels around Europe with friends and family. The City Lane might have changed quite a lot since those early days but one thing that’s remained constant is Paul’s passion for food, travel and culture, and a desire to photograph and write about his experiences. Paul has a strong inquisitive nature that drives him to look beneath the surface in order to discover what really makes a city and its people tick, and what better way to do this than over a good meal or drink, with a city’s locals, at places that people who live in that city actually frequent. Paul is also a co-host of The Brunswick Beer Collective, a podcast that may or may not actually be about beer.
