CUSCO | Nuevo Mundo was founded in 2013 in Lima by two French expats, Alain Schneider and Yann Lemaire and has expanded to become one of the most well known craft breweries in Peru. Their Draft Bar in Cusco is one of the best craft beer bars in town, and a great spot to try not only Nuevo Mundo’s beers, but beers from other Peruvian craft breweries.
Located directly across from Cusco’s main square, the bar is long and narrow, with bar stools and benches towards the entrance opening up to a larger space towards the windows that overlook the plaza. There’s a lot of wooden finishes and furniture and warm lighting, which give the bar a cozy, welcoming feel. Screens show live sports and the music is a mixture of classic rock hits, as well as live music some nights.
Nuevo Mundo tries to put a twist on every beer that it creates and this is evident in its seasonal and limited run beers, many of which are influenced by Peru’s different regions. Across the taps you’ll generally find a 50/50 split of beers from Nuevo Mundo and other Peruvian craft beer. The Premium Triple, an 8.5% ABV bottle fermented Belgium Triple is fantastic and tastes of grapes, banana and pear. Also fantastic is Theo, a 7.0% ABV Chocolate Stout.
If you can’t find something you want on tap, there’s a fridge full of bottles, including a few limited release beers no longer available in keg.
The food is pub grub with a Peruvian twist like burgers with alpaca patties, and patatas nativas fries. There are also a few options that draw upon the owner’s French heritage. For example a platter of pate, artisan sausages and bread.
