LIMA | Nuevo Mundo was founded in 2013 in Lima by two French expats, Alain Schneider and Yann Lemaire and has expanded to become one of the most well known craft breweries in Peru. Their Draft Bar in Miraflores opened in 2017, with the help of fellow French expat Mario Casas, and its a great place to get a real taste of what Nuevo Mundo does.
The bar is small, with warm lighting and lots of natural materials and tones. Screens show live sports and while the venue isn’t quiet, the music’s never so loud that you can’t have a conversation. The walls are covered with art from a rotating array of Peruvian artists, along with posters form beer festivals around the world. Towards the back is a small brewery where Nuevo Mundo brew a few Draft Bar only releases – the rest of the beers are brewed at their larger facility in nearby Surquillo.
Nuevo Mundo tries to put a twist on every beer that it creates and this is evident in its seasonal and limited run beers, many of which are influenced by Peru’s different regions. Across the 12 taps you’ll generally find a 50/50 split of beers from Nuevo Mundo and other Peruvian craft beer. The Premium Triple, an 8.5% ABV bottle fermented Belgium Triple is fantastic and tastes of grapes, banana and pear. Also fantastic is Theo, a 7.0% ABV Chocolate Stout.
If you can’t find something you want on tap, there’s a fridge full of bottles, including a few limited release beers no longer available in keg.
The food is pub grub with a Peruvian twist like burgers with aguaymanto ketchup, and patatas nativas fries. There are also a few options that draw upon the owner’s French heritage. For example a platter of pate, artisan sausages and bread.
