MELBOURNE | Ocean 12 is a whiskey, tapas, cigar, and karaoke bar, and from the moment you walk out of the escalator into space on Level 3 in Crown Melbourne, you know that this a no expense spared kind of affair.

My friend Daisy (aka @daisy_nevertoosweet) was invited to check out the multi function space, and asked me to join, along with my friend Ashley (aka @imsohungree). The sprawling venue is located in what was nightclub and event space Studio 3. There’s a variety of spaces, aimed at catering to an assortment of tastes. Outside, there’s Bar 12, which overlooks the Yarra river and the CBD skyline. Inside, it’s large square bar, that branches off into a number of private karaoke rooms.

There are four different types of karaoke rooms, ranging from small rooms that fit up to six guests, through to VIP rooms with space for up to 40 people. We were given a tour through the very impressive (and expensive) VIP rooms before being shown to our small room, which was still very nice, for some food and karaoke. No matter which room you choose, there’s a selection of over 140,000 songs, in six different languages. Every room has dedicated hosts on hand to help you out at the press of a buzzer.

Ocean 12 has an extensive alcohol and in particular, whiskey selection, with options at all price levels. And if you’re a fan of Cuban cigars, there’s over 40 different ones on offer here, with dedicated smoking areas.

Food wise, it’s a mixture of Chinese and Western dishes. We sampled the Sichuan-style beef skewers, special egg fried rice, tiramisu, and chocolate mousse cake. The skewers, while not particularly spicy, are tasty, as is the rice and mousse cake. We all agreed that the tiramisu was quite watery, so you’re best avoiding that one. Other menu options include things like antipasto, shredded pigs ear with chilli sauce, deep fried garlic pork ribs, and mango pomelo sago. Certainly a step up in choice compared to your usual karaoke fare.

Ocean 12 is a great option for those who are looking for a karaoke spot that’s a step up from most. The drinks and food selection is great, and the rooms are all quite plush, even the entry level ones. Almost any song you could possibly want to sing is available, and if you’re not into karaoke, Bar 12 is a great option on its own for a drink and some food with friends.
