PERTH | Old Faithful Bar & BBQ is an American BBQ joint from Jan Kulski and Talmage Andersen (Ezra Pound) and is the place to go in Perth if you’re after some of that USA inspired low and slow goodness.
The King Street space makes use of the heritage bones of the buildings – lots of exposed brick and high ceilings go well with the assorted pieces of Americana that are dotted throughout the venue. It’s not a large space, but it’s quite open, with an assortment of communal benches, smaller tables and bar seating.
The food isn’t focused on one particular region of the USA, but takes its cues from across the South. All the meat and produce is sourced locally, and a few dishes even use Australian spices in the rubs for a bit of local flavour. Meat is smoked on site, over beech, hickory, and coal for anywhere between 18-24 hours and the result is some very flavoursome, tender meat. Sauces and rubs are also made from scratch on site. We have read a few reviews of Old Faithful complaining that the meat isn’t served hot but remember this is American BBQ – everything is cooked low and slow and the meat never really gets that hot. It’s the way it’s meant to be.
The Texas style beef brisket is a highlight – thinly sliced with tender meat and melt in your mouth fat. The dense, flavoursome pulled pig is delicious too. The sticky, fall of the bone pork ribs are another highlight and cooked just right. For sides the fried potatoes with blue cheese sauce are a must, as is the corn with ranch sauce and cheese.
The drinks menu at Old Faithful is no slouch either, and the place holds its own as one of the top craft beer venues in the city. 16 taps showcase a rotating selection of mostly Western Australian craft beers with a few interstate and American options too. The bottle selection features around 10 or so additional options. As well as beer there’s also decent cocktail menu and a selection of whiskey and bourbon – all designed to go well with the style of food on offer. For those into wine, there’s a decent selection of around 20 Australian and international wines on offer.
And if you were wondering yes the name Old Faithful comes from a geyser in Yellowstone National Park, which isn’t anywhere near the South but hey, with food and beer this good we’ll allow it.
