LONDON | Oldroyd Islington is the newest venture from Tom Oldroyd, one of the founding chef directors of Polpo, who saw it grow from a single restaurant in 2009 to the multi-branch chain it is today. The first thing you notice when you visit Oldroyd is that it’s small. A narrow venue with a tiny kitchen and a few tables downstairs, and a few more tables upstairs – all up the restaurant only seats 40. It’s a very casual and cozy space, but do be aware that it can get quite cozy when busy, and it’s not unusual to find yourself doing a bit of contortion to make your way to your table while the waitstaff are similarly moving about.

The food that comes out of the small kitchen is fantastic. The menu changes daily and contains a selection of small and more substantial European dishes influenced by Spain, France, and Italy, featuring seasonal British produce. The spinach & ricotta malfatti, with chanterelles & crispy sage is one of the best pasta dishes we have ever tried, full of perfectly balanced, strong flavours, while the pea & pork belly croquetas with truffle mayonnaise are creamy, crispy and utterly divine. The gooseberry mess, with hazelnut meringue & jersey cream, is a delight come dessert. Of course the changing menu means you might not see any of these when you visit, but rest assured you can’t really go wrong no matter what you order.

The drinks list is small, but features a thoughtful selection of craft beer, wines, and cocktails.

With so many places on our list to eat at in London, a venue has to be very good for us to visit it multiple times. Needless to say, we’ve dined at Oldroyd several times since our first visit.
