MELBOURNE | For a limited time only, popular Italian-inspired gelateria Pidapipo is collaborating with local artisan chocolatiers Hunted + Gathered to create a small range of ‘Death by Chocolate’ flavours, using handcrafted quality chocolate as the base of the gelato. The City Lane were invited to Hunted + Gathered’s boutique chocolate factory in Cremorne to learn the process of how their chocolate is made, followed by a preview tasting of the new flavours.
Started by Charlie and Harry Nissen, Hunted + Gathered focuses on sourcing organic cacao beans from Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Belize. After importing them to Melbourne, they roast, develop and refine the cacao to produce chocolate for people who are passionate about taste and quality. Despite operating on a small scale in their boutique factory, their products are stocked Australia-wide. Their method of only using 3 ingredients highlights their dedication to preserving the organic nature of their chocolate.
Also dedicated to using the finest ingredients, Pidapipo gelateria create daily-churned, seasonal gelato flavours. Part-experimental kitchen and part-retail store, Pidapipo has locations in Carlton and Windsor. Owner Lisa Valmorbida consistently stays true to her Italian heritage, sharing her passion for Italian culture and desserts with the rest of Melbourne. The fact that she went to a gelato university in Italy should be reason enough to check out what her gelaterias have to offer.
For a few weeks only (4 weeks from Friday 26th August), 3 ‘Death by Chocolate’ flavours will be available at both Pidapipo stores. These include Dark Chocolate Fondant with candied orange (a dairy-free 70% dark chocolate sorbetto), Double Roasted Chocolate with smoked salt chocolate ganache (70% dark chocolate), and an original flavour created by Pidapipo that is also available in a chocolate block, Malted Milk Chocolate with caramel (70% dark chocolate). All 3 flavours tasted deliciously creamy and decadent when we tried them, with the high quality chocolate used as the base clearly shining through with each bite. Definitely one to check out!
