MELBOURNE | Idly sitting opposite Glen Waverley train station, Platform 7 Café offers an escape from the everyday grind through their mature approach to all-day dining, with cleverly executed food served alongside signature coffee and tea blends. We were invited in recently, and were keen to check out the latest of many new eateries to have opened up in this part of town in recent times.

Inspired by their sister restaurant in the city, Hash Specialty Coffee, Platform 7 brings a touch of the urban coffee scene to the suburbs, joining the ranks of abundantly more cafés that are transforming Glen Waverley into a popular dining destination.

Although quite unassuming from the exterior, enter Platform 7 Café and you will be intrigued by its eclectic interior design, complete with water jug beakers and a cold drip coffee contraption. Separated into two seating areas, you can choose to sit at their high-tabled bench tops near the front entrance, or in the slightly warmer section towards the back, the latter of which is more ideal for intimate dining.

Contributing to the cool yet moody vibes are artwork displayed along the walls, showcasing local talent that will be on a rotating display, as at Hash Specialty Coffee’s venue. Their desire to promote local businesses will soon extend to gallery exhibitions held at Platform 7 Café, thus venturing where few others have gone before, merging the world of art and food.

The breakfast, brunch and lunch menu sees creations like a BBQ Pork Benedict sweetened by grilled pineapple and mashed peas, and a Breakfast Ramen served in a pork and miso broth. For a touch of decadence, Black Truffle Folded Eggs rest on a mushroom duxelle and thick-cut brioche toast, whilst a butter poached lobster tail is served in a matcha brioche bun. The Grain Bowl offers a healthily filling option, though the intensity of the burnt eggplant puree along with the lack of strong flavours in the other ingredients slightly misses the mark for us.

For a sweet finish, the Nutella Banana Pecan Loaf exhibits the perfect balance of chocolatey goodness with fresh flavours. Berries, figs and sweet ricotta mingle with bruleed banana, honeycomb and vanilla mascarpone, sitting atop a slightly dry house made banana and pecan loaf, sufficiently moistened by a mini jug of chocolate pouring sauce.

Coffee is freshly roasted daily, featuring Arabica coffee as their house blend, and a regularly changing Single Origin espresso and filter bean option. Other offerings include artisan tea by Larsen & Thompson, their own creative blend of Matcha latte, and the signature Hash Hot Chocolate (though we are told, it is only temporarily making an appearance on the menu).

Certainly a unique offering in the Glen Waverley area, Platform 7 Café appears to be striving for something that is difficult for many attain. Their creative combination of ingredients and decadent flavours form an exciting menu, though we question whether this level of sophistication is suitable for the suburban locality. Nevertheless, their intention to create a unique brand and to steer way from their city venue is succeeding with their current offering.
