SAN DIEGO | Poor House Brewing Company is a North Park brewery that does things a little different than its neighbours. Rather than feeling like a space that’s been set up inside a section of a brewery in a warehouse, the taproom here actually feels like a small neighbourhood bar. It’s a welcoming place, and clearly very popular with locals.
Beers are brewed out the back in Poor House’s one barrel, yes one barrel, brewing system. When people talk about nano brewers, it’s places like this they’re referring to. On the taps you’ll find mostly Belgian style beers and IPAs, which is what Poor House specialises in. Their flagship beer, Hop 30, is a heavily hopped IIPA that has a blend of 30 different hops and the blend of hops isn’t always the same. Head brewer Derek Linwood likes to experiment and has the freedom to do so here. Their Brown Baggin It, an American Brown Ale, is also fantastic and there’s always something interesting and experimental on the taps too.
