MELBOURNE | Prospect Espresso is cafe owned by Coffee Culture Communication Group, the cafe maestros behind cafes like Sir Charles, Blue Fox, and Liar Liar. The name suggests a proficiency in pulling shots of espresso, and thankfully the coffee here does not disappoint. Espresso and filter beans are sourced from a rotating selection of Melbourne roasters like Axil, Code Black and Maker, meaning there’s always something new to try if you don’t want the smooth signature CCC Group espresso blend, AU79.

The cafe has limited seating, with a few individual tables sharing the space with a large communal towards the back. The menu contains a generous number of light and more substantial offerings. Health conscious folk might enjoy the House Dill and Citrus Cured Trout with grilled asparagus, smashed avocado, radish, a poached egg, and multigrain toast smeared with a beetroot goats cheese curd. For us, the highlight is the “Corny” breakfast fritters – corn and haloumi fritters sit atop a bed of quinoa and cauliflower (interspersed with a surprising yet enjoyable addition of fried haloumi), and roasted garlic hummus. Garnished with cranberries, poached eggs and added crispy bacon, the flavours and textures work together wonderfully.

Those with a sweet tooth should try the Jaffa Brioche French Toast, dusted with a cinnamon powder and served with whipped Nutella mascarpone, citrus segments, orange syrup, freeze-dried raspberries, matcha soil and hazelnut crumble. A really nice balance of contrasting flavours and textures that isn’t overly sweet.

Overall, Prospect Espresso aims to offers something a bit different than the usual breakfast fare in this part of town, and we’re happy to report that they’re succeeding.
