MELBOURNE | Ramen Misoya Sake Bar finally brings ramen to Brunswick along the ever changing Sydney Road. The space is quite homely with its extensive use of exposed brick and wood. It works for those in the mood for a substantial meal, or those simply wanting a few drinks and snacks. Along with ramen Misoya Sake Bar offers a range of Japanese food designed for sharing such as gyoza, karaage and edamame. We were particularly impressed by the karaage, which was very moist and tender with a light crispy coating and a shiitake mushroom sauce – something a bit different than the norm and it really worked.

The ramen here is a bit different than the other recent openings in Melbourne, focusing on a miso based chicken stock rather than the more popular Tonkotsu pork bone broth based ramen. The result is a ramen that has a thinner broth than most are accustomed to in Melbourne, but by no means any less flavoursome. The one bugbear we did have is that the ramen by itself is served without any extras, which is in contrast to many of the places who stick with the Japanese tradition of including everything you could want in the bowl. Any extras such as some extra chilli or garlic, you have to pay for. Still, the ramen even without extras is very tasty, and the noodles have just the right amount of spring to them.

While not the best ramen in Melbourne, the ramen and other menu items at Ramen Misoya Sake Bar are all very tasty, making the spot a worthwhile addition to the burgeoning and diversifying Sydney Road dining scene.
