MELBOURNE | Picture this… You’re sitting on a rooftop in the middle of the city, the sun beaming down on a balmy 20-degree Sunday evening. Conversation fills the air, fuelled by sweet cocktails finding their way to most tables in the area, setting the scene for a social-driven experience at this east-meets-west themed restaurant and bar. Red Piggy is the cool new kid on the block, shaking things up one cocktail at a time.

Discreetly located on the top floor of a 3-level building along Little Bourke Street, look for the logo of a little pig at their street level entrance. Occupying a single level space on the building’s rooftop, cozy indoor seating compliments the L-shaped outdoor area, perfect for casual post-work drinks or an intimate meal for two.

A few weeks ago, we were invited to attend their Lychee Festival, with an unlimited supply of lychee martini’s and a 5-course menu all included in the ticketed 2-hour session. Celebrating this subtly sweet tropical fruit that is abundantly consumed throughout the Asia-Pacific region, the fast-paced staff consistently churned out lychee martini’s all night long, with guests so happy that some even verbally rejoiced at the arrival of more of these thirst-quenching concoctions.

The 5-course menu provided as part of this event showcased a selection of popular items from their main menu. Proudly demonstrating a mixture of salty, sweet, spicy and sour tastes, the cuisine at Red Piggy applies a modern twist on classic Southeast Asian flavours and dishes, particularly influenced by the French Indochina region and its rich history.

Dishes like Crab Meat & Pork Spring Roll, Five Spiced Tofu and Slow-Cooked Lamb Neck in a red Thai curry stole the show, giving us a sneak peek into Red Piggy’s vibrant menu. Based on our experience at this event, it is evident that traditions are respected and retained through the ingredients used and the base flavours present, with variations made to appease our western-influenced palates.

Perusing the venue, neon-lit signage on the walls adds to the nightlife ambience, as does a live DJ on site. Odes to Indochinese heritage are found through little trinkets dotted around the venue, whilst a touch of natural beauty is found in the floral wall lining the boundaries of the outdoor rooftop area. As pretty as this décor is, it unfortunately blocks eye-level city views for customers to appreciate whilst ingesting their food and drinks. If these walls were lowered, it would significantly enhance the memorable experience of visiting Red Piggy. Nevertheless, this doesn’t dampen the fun and vibrant atmosphere, instead potentially heightening it to create a sense of intimacy and privacy for this publicly-accessed restaurant, bar and function space.
