MELBOURNE | Calling the Windsor end of Chapel Street home, Resto BoBo is bringing a taste of modern French cuisine to Melbourne. Opened by ex-engineer Dan Xerri, his desire to showcase traditional French dining with a modern twist is inspired by his time living in Strasbourg, where he fell in love with the culture and the food. Upon his return to Melbourne in 2014, his vision of owning a restaurant that specialised in the traditional French tarte flambee, came to fruition in part thanks to the open-minded acceptance of Melbourne’s progressively changing and varied dining scene.

The City Lane was invited to attend the launch event of Resto BoBo one wintery Thursday evening, with wine, canapes and delicious tarte flambee to warm us up. If you haven’t heard of this dish before, tarte flambee is essentially France’s version of a savoury pizza, originating from Alsace. Bread dough is rolled out to a thin consistency, usually in the shape of a rectangle or circle. It is then smeared with a thin layer of crème fraiche or sprinkled with white cheese, and lightly topped with meat, vegetables and/or herbs. Baked to a crisp-thin texture, the only way to eat this delicacy is with your hands.

In fact, most of the food offerings at Resto BoBo are designed to be eaten without a knife and fork. We think the intent is to bring people together, and to ignite some fun into eating out, both of which they have achieved through the menu. A simple list of both traditional and not-so-traditional tarte flambee are offered, including both savoury and sweet options, which infuse Melbourne flavor profiles and ingredients into this traditional dish. The French-leaning menu also includes a small range of salads, charcuterie and cheeses.

Introducing a niche concept to Melbourne’s dining scene, Resto BoBo sure know how to attract a cult following. Its name refers to the coming together of two distinct social classes (bourgeois and bohemian), which appropriately mirrors the communal dining concept that tarte flambee often inspires, and that Resto BoBo aims to recreate. Adding some charm to the intimate venue, art nouveau is displayed via paintings hanging on the wall and an intriguing piece of artwork hanging from the roof, whilst hipster vibes emanate from the exposed brick wall as you walk through the entrance. Showcasing simple, unpretentious food paired with an extensive local and international wine list, this is the perfect Windsor-cool place to share some laughs and immerse yourself in European dining culture.
