MELBOURNE | ReWine Brunswick East is a wine store and bar with a difference. Owner Marshall Waters started ReWine after learning about the ‘négociant’ model in France, where wine is sourced from several wineries across south-eastern Australia, and stored in barrels at the one shop. There are 12 barrels featuring a diverse array of wines, and all are available to enjoy in the store, by the glass, along with a few bar snacks like cheese, charcuterie, and jaffles.
If you want to purchase a bottle, the concept is simple. You first purchase comes with a bottle, and when you’re done with it you wash the bottle and bring it back for a refill of whichever wine you want. The setup is such that oxidation issues are avoided, and if you want to bring in your own bottle of any size to be filled, you can do that too. There’s a discount of $3 per refill, which encourages customers to come back and be environmentally conscious.
There are lots of interesting wines here, including many you won’t find elsewhere. Along with the traditional and well known wines, you can find things like natural ferment and organic wines too. On our most recent visit we tried a very interesting natural ferment organic rose.
There’s also a ReWine at the Queen Victoria Markets if you want somewhere a bit more central, but do be aware that it’s a smaller venue with shorter hours.
