MELBOURNE | Popular South African burger chain RocoMamas have been expanding rapidly through Africa and the Middle East in recent years, and now they’ve opened their first Australian flagship on Chapel Street. They offer an assortment of burgers, ribs, sides and drinks. The signature item is their ‘not normal’ smash burger. If you’ve had a double patty smash from Rockwell & Sons, you’ll be familiar with the smash method of cooking burgers. A ball of fresh burger meat is ‘smashed’ down with force onto sizzling grill and flattened into a patty, resulting in a juicy patty with a higher than normal surface area for all the charred bits.

The menu is fun and has a lot of variety to appeal to all taste buds. You can order a classic smash burger or make your own. We ordered the Black Star which is one of the signature burgers on a charcoal bun. The burger is jam packed with crispy southern fried chicken, smash, Hanoi slaw, onion, tomato and sweet chilli mayo. We also sampled the Classic Cheese with smash, bacon, Wisconsin cheddar, sweet pickles, tomato, onion and sweet pickles. Making your own burger is a lot of fun, and there are nearly thirty ingredients to choose from.

It’s not just burgers at RocoMamas, and the ribs are definitely a must try. The Baby Rack falls off the bone and melts in your mouth, and if you want a larger feed, the ‘Mother of all Racks’ is a great option. Lathered in sauce, you can choose between regular BBQ or hot BBQ. The wings are also a great side, cooked tender and to perfection. The classic fries are simply cooked, crispy and hot. If you are feeling adventurous, you can also try the turbo charged fries with cheese, chilli cheese or bacon and cheese.

The drinks menu is packed with options, which is great for a burger joint. You can order a cocktail, enjoy a variety of craft beers, craft sodas, wine or indulge in a custard shake which is exactly what we did. We had the Nutella butter salted caramel which balances the flavours nicely and isn’t overly sweet – a great way to wash down our tasty burgers.

RocoMammas has a real passion for burgers, and despite being a global chain it doesn’t feel like it. It’s got a different vibe to other burger joints, paying homage to truly authentic, tasty burgers. If you’re looking for a tasty burger that’s a little different than the rest, RocoMamas is highly recommended.
