NEW YORK CITY | Russ & Daughters Shop is one of those places that you always feel odd writing about – as if a place that’s over 100 years old needs anyone to tell people how good it is. While people in New York City will be well aware of the qualities that keep this place busy after so many years, many a visitor will never have heard about it.
For the uninitiated, Russ & Daughters is a family run Jewish delicatessen that’s been operating in the same location in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, run by the same family, since 1914. If you’re looking for the highest quality smoked fish, caviar, baked goods, and specialty foods in town, this is where you come. Many call Russ & Daughters a deli, but in fact it’s an ‘appetizing’ store, appetizing being a Jewish food tradition that is most typical among American Jews, in particular New York. It’s most easily understood as “the foods one eats with bagels” – things like smoked and cured salmon, homemade salads, and cream cheeses.
As well as a variety of produce, there are of course food items that you can order to go here, the most popular being a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon, known here as “The Classic”. It’s made fresh to order, has barely changed in over 100 years, and is a perfect example of its kind.
There’s really not much more to say about Russ & Daughters that you need to know, it’s an essential piece of New York history that doesn’t just rest on its laurels and reputation. It’s relevant, excellent, and somewhere that every visitor to New York City should go. Also highly recommended is Russ & Daughters Cafe, which opened in 2014 and does one thing the original does not – it gives customers a place to sit down and enjoy their food.
