NEW YORK CITY | Russ & Daughters Cafe opened in 2014, on the 100th anniversary of the iconic Russ & Daughters Shop and did something that the original had never done – gave customers a place to sit down to enjoy their food.

For those who don’t know, Russ & Daughters is a New York City institution, a Jewish deli that sells high quality fish, caviar, baked goods and other delights. Russ & Daughters Deli takes many of its design cues from the original, and feels new yet familiar. Backlit signs, historic photos and large jars of produce all serve to give the newer venue a sense of authenticity. Don’t think that Russ & Daughters is just trading on nostalgia though – this is a place that can well and truly stand its own ground.

The open kitchen allows diners to see food being prepared, and large pieces of salmon being thinly sliced to order. Menu options include things like smoked fish, pickled herring, and caviar, plus larger breakfast, lunch and dinner options. We love the potato latkes with wild salmon roe and creme fraiche, and are huge fans of the chocolate babka French toast with sour cream and berries. The Classic bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese is of course fantastic as always – we recommend adding tomato and capers for bagel perfection.

For drinks a soda fountain bar serves up homemade sodas, egg creams, shrubs, and tasty cocktails. Try the “Heads and Tails” – a tasty concoction of Espolon Blanco Tequila, Vida Mezcal, Dolin Dry Vermouth, housemade lemon-lime cordial, and spiced salt.
