WAHGUNYAH | Rutherglen Brewery is an oasis for beer drinkers in this famed wine region. The brewery’s range of beer is named for Seven-Star Wallace, the historic Rutherglen entrepreneur John Wallace, who is famed for starting the region’s star hotels. History has it that Wallace named Rutherglen after his birthplace after buying a round of drinks for the bar of the Star Hotel in 1860 in the town of Barkly (as Rutherglen was then known).
Owners Gavin Swalwell and Fiona Myers always had a love of great beer and thought that a craft brewery would be a natural fit for Rutherglen. “Sessionability” is important here, and all of the beers are designed by head brewer Simon Bardill (ex Mornington Peninsula and Red Hill) to be tasty but accessible. Try the Wallaces Pilsner, or the Chocolate Porter for something more full bodied.
The brewery is attached to the excellent “Taste” restaurant and features six of its own beers on tap. It’s a casual affair and, along with the great beers, you can eat house made bread and some rather tasty and creative pizzas. Step outside into the beer garden and you’ll be greeted with a casual space and sometimes live music too.
