MELBOURNE | The Sandy V’s is a small bar we discovered when walking up Smith Street in Fitzroy the other day that we’d like to tell you more about, but to be honest it’s all a bit of a mystery. Look it up online and there’s no info apart from the Facebook page which does have sporadic posts, but not much in the way of a back story.
What we can gather is that a few friends appear to have gotten together to open a bar which reflects their personality, and is refreshingly different than most bars in the area. The place is so small that you could easily walk past without noticing that it’s an actual venue. Walk through the door and you soon see why – it’s basically the space in between two buildings that’s got some shading but is essentially open to the elements. There are plants, some artworks, crates, benches and eclectic lights, and a few games like Uno and the like.
The fitout is eclectic, and the whole place is the definition of casual and unpretentious. The staff when we visited sure seemed to be having a lot of fun, as did the diverse crowd of individuals chilling out enjoying a drink. The drinks are found in a small fridge behind the kind of bar, and most of the stuff served is in cans – there’s a little can crusher and at the front of the venue so you can recycle your cans as you go. What’s not in cans is in bottles – no straws, no glasses, although you can BYO glass if you really want to drink out of one. It’s all accessible drinks, with a few house spirits, whites and reds, and craft and commercial lagers and summer ales.
Who is behind the bar? What’s it’s story? We don’t really know. All we do know is that we like it, and that you should visit. Oh and it’s pet friendly, so feel free to bring your dog too.
