MELBOURNE | Andrew Lloyd Webber’s successful Broadway and West End muscial School of Rock: The Musical, has opened in Melbourne and, after seeing the opening night showing, we can highly recommend it to theatre goers of all ages.
The musical is based on the 2003 film School of Rock, and is about struggling rock guitarist Dewey Finn, who is kicked out of his band and subsequently disguises himself as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. When Dewery realises that his students have amazing musical talent, he forms a band with them and attempts to win the Battle of the Bands and pay off his rent.
The role of Dewey, played by Jack Black in the original film, is played by Brent Hill, who nails the Jack Black mannerisms of the character perfectly. Amy Lehpamer, who plays the role of school principal Rosalie Mullins is equally great.
Joining them and the rest of the adult cast are the fantastically talented children. There’s actually three full rotating casts of children for the Melbourne run of School of Rock, and the cast we saw on opening night were fantastic. The show opens with a voice-over by Lloyd Webber, notifying theatre goers that the children do indeed play all of their own instruments, and when you see them perform you’ll be amazed. Zane Blumeris, who plays the role of lead guitarist Zack, wows with his mastery of the electric guitar that’s bigger than he is. It’s hard to believe that he only picked up a guitar for the first time in 2016!
All up, the musical is fun, with a warming story and lots of great tunes. It’s the kind of thing that the whole family can enjoy.
Once the Melbourne run is up, the musical will continue its tour in Brisbane (opens July 2019), Sydney (opens November 2019).
