PERTH | Shadow Wine Bar is one of the new generation of venues that laughs in the face of the idea that hotel bars and restaurants have to be sub par. Located at street level on the ground floor of Perth’s Alex Hotel, Shadow is all about providing quality wines and contemporary European cooking in a casual, modern space.
The bar is housed in an old National bank building, and features high ceilings, a mixture of concrete, steel, and wood, soft lighting, and a dramatic curtained wall. Large windows overlooking William Street mean that the space is bright and airy when the sun is shining.
The menu is split into the bar menu and dining menu. You can order from the bar menu at the bar, and from both in the seated dining area. They’re all simple, well executed dishes that let the quality produce shine. The bar menu includes things like mussels escabeche with saffron and fennel, haloumi with black sesame and honey, and ocean trout with creme fraiche and cucumber. The mussels are particularly delightful.
For bigger dishes, It’s dishes like veal carpaccio with cipollini, capers, and parmesan, lamb loin with asparagus, green chilli, coriander, and feta, and the must order Shark bay crab spaghettini with capers, lemon, tomato, and chilli. Desserts are also well worth considering. Try the pear tarte tatin with tonka bean ice cream, or the nougat semifreddo with strawberries and amaretti
The wine list is in sync with the food, and focuses on wines from Europe, but there’s no shortage of Australian drops on offer should you want them. There’s also a few craft beers options, and a sharp list of cocktails and mocktails.
