AIZUWAKAMATSU | Shibukawa Donya is a restaurant that specialises in traditional Aizu cuisine, in a former seafood warehouse dating back over 120 years. The exterior of the building is in keeping with the historical nature of Nanokamachi street and the interior is no different. Beautifully restored, the old Meiji era warehouse features beautiful dining spaces, as well as a library and calming garden.

More than just a restaurant, Shibukawa Donya also offers accommodation for those looking for a place to stay in Aizuwakamatsu, with a small number of Western and Japanese style rooms available. In fact, in its heyday as a seafood warehouse, the building housed over 50 people, including six families and their servants.

Given the history of Shibukawa Donya, it should come as no surprise that seafood is one of the things you’ll want to try here. Most of the meal sets come with the salted cod and pickled herring that Shibukawa Donya have been famous for since the 1800s. Another delicacy well worth trying is the delicious Aizu Shiokawa beef, which is served lightly seasoned with salt, and melts in your mouth with each bite.
