MELBOURNE | The Shifty’s is the current incarnation of the venue formerly known as Shifty Chev. New owners were the reason behind the name change, and while the focus isn’t quite as cheesy as it used to be, cheese still plays a big part at the refreshed Shifty’s.
It’s a casual, relaxed space with street art inside and out. In the mornings it’s all about espresso based coffee drinks and a handful of teas and juices, along with a breakfast. Think ricotta hotcakes with orange blossom mascarpone cream and fresh figs, or the famous Shifty’s croque monsieur with wagyu bresaola, smoked mozzarella, bechamel sauce, parmesan cheese and truffle mustard. And yes, there’s still avo on toast.
Later on in the day and into the evenings it’s things like quesadillas, mac & cheese, roast pork belly and confit duck leg. Of course there are also cheese and charcuterie boards on offer too. All cheese comes in 30g portions and meats in 100g portions, with the option to build your own board the way we like to go. Beers and wines are mostly local – there’s a good selection of wines across a variety of styles on offer, however the beer selection unfortunately lacks variety, tending towards the commercial and almost elusively pale end of the spectrum. A small selection of cocktails completes things.
