MELBOURNE | Sibling is a Carlton cafe that operates with a bit of a different purpose than most cafes in town. It’s a sister venue to Kinfolk in the CBD, is volunteer run, and donates 100% of profits to charities like the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and the Cathy Freeman Foundation.
The concept is by co-founder Jarrod Briffa, and really does do a lot of good things. The volunteers who work here tend to be people who face barriers to social inclusion, and working here provides them with work experience and training, and a community connection.
The space is bright and airy, with a bit of an indoor garden vibe due to the jungle print wallpaper and light colour scheme. The menu is mostly vegetarian, with food coming from local farms and producers. Think chilli scrambled eggs with roasted Brussels sprouts, herbs and lemon, and my favourite, the arepas. The arepas here are different to what I tried in Colombia – thicker and bit more moist. The unmistakable corn flour taste is there though, and the dish works wonderfully, combined with pumpkin mojo verde, seeds, ashed goats curd, and an optional (is it ever optional really) poached egg.
For drinks it’s coffee by Small Batch, along with alternative milks, juices, tea by the Staple Store, and a small wine, beer and cocktail selection. The strawberry G&T with Poor Toms Strawberry Gin is particularly delicious.
