LONDON | Smokey Tails is the brainchild of Michigan-born chef and DJ Seth Troxler, and sees his popular music and American BBQ pop-up find a permanent home in Hoxton Square. The space is simple with art, wood, a DJ booth, and a low ceiling creating a cozy space. The outside courtyard is a great option if you can grab a table there. The beat and eats theme from the popup carries to the permanent location, and do be aware that music can get quite loud, especially when combined with the low ceiling and shortage of sound absorbing surfaces.
We’d heard tales of service being slow here, and unfortunately on our visit we experienced the same. Staff were friendly and helpful when we could get there attention, but it was tough to do so, which was surprising given that we were one of the few tables dining during an off-peak time in the middle of the day.
The menu features a mixture of American BBQ dishes and elevated versions of fast food classics. Think pulled pork. ribs, brisket, mac & cheese, fried chicken and the like. We opted for a different option than usual, as we’d heard decent things about the vegetarian options here, and went for the smoked halloumi bun, with rocket, salsa & ST Buffalo mayo. It was quite tasty and keenly priced at £8.00 given the size, but could have done with some more flavour in the salsa. We also went for the smoked pork rib, which tasted really nice – a great smokey flavour that balanced well with Seth’s BBQ sauce. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite the fall of the bone texture that we look for when ordering American BBQ ribs.
For those looking for a drink, a range of seasonal cocktails, local beers, and wines is offered.
