MELBOURNE | South of Johnston is a Collingwood cafe that’s all about good food and coffee, and sustainability. The space is located in an old warehouse on Oxford Street and has been transformed into a bit of an urban oasis with plush couches, artwork and greenery inside and wooden crates out the front which are used to grow fruit, veges, and herbs that customers and locals can help themselves to.
Sustainability is more than just a buzz word here. 40 solar panels on the roof generate enough energy to power 60% of the cafe’s energy requirements and almost all of the food and non-food waste is recycled. Green waste is sent to a local chicken farm, while cardboard and polystyrene packaging and milk containers go back to the suppliers.
The menu features an assortment of classic Melbourne cafe dishes with modern, seasonal twists. All ingredients are sourced from local, ethical suppliers and producers, and the result is some tasty, high quality food. Think things like pancakes with poached strawberries & pistachio mascarpone, penne with braised chicken, green olives, orange zest and rosemary, and a pulled pork burger with fennel kimchi, pickled cucumber, tasty cheese & mayo. For drinks its a few wines and beers along with freshly squeezed juices, coffee from Supreme, and an assortment of twists on the latte.
