LONDON | Serving up hot pieces of fried chicken, mouth-watering cocktails and a much-appreciated dose of classic Southern American comfort food is Fulham’s new Stagolee’s Hot Chicken & Liquor Joint. The hot duo behind this joint is Tennessee native Jordan Harris alongside Texas native and head chef Ashley James offering dishes inspired by their Grandmother’s recipes – it doesn’t get more authentic than this. Walk inside and you’re immediately transported into a cool, cosy Nashville shack inspired restaurant/small bar.

The menu is as unapologetically American as it gets – a melange of Southern classics such as mac and cheese, corn bread, and fried chicken with newly introduced dishes such as the hot spinach dip and devilled eggs whipped yolk in boiled egg whites.

This joint is also one for the drink aficionados, offering a worthy drink selection that showcases the finest from the South. Drinks such as the Bourbon and Moonshine based cocktails pay a nod to the US Prohibition era and served during their increasingly popular brunch, lunch and Supper (dinner) service.

We opted for the HOT skillet fried chicken coated in buttermilk (you can choose from mild to the Tom Devil …only If your tongue is made of asbestos as this stuff is pretty hot!) For ‘snacks’ we opted for the pimento cheese spread and hot spinach dip served with tortilla chips.

Just like the warm service, the buttermilk-dipped chicken is made with a whole lot of love. Fresh, large, tender moist drumsticks and breasts coated in the crispiest mildly spiced brown coating, topped with sweetened watermelon and jalapeno peppers. Everything about this chicken is right. The moreish creamy pimento cheese spread, also known as the Caviar of the South and hot spinach dip makes for a cheesy overload, but it works perfectly alongside the fluffy tasty devilled eggs, freshly made warm cornbread and crinkle fries.

Though myself and my guest were neck up in this American feast, we didn’t stop there. Things got even better with the tempting desserts. We finished off with hot apple pie topped with fresh cream – a simple ‘slice of heaven’, along with a serving of the Stagolee’s Bonuts – deep fried balls of dough, sugar and goodness.

Everything we ate at Stagolee’s was delicious, and you won’t go wrong no matter what you order, but do make sure you get the must try Skillet Buttermilk Chicken, and Hot Spinach Dip. The verdict? We genuinely couldn’t find one fault with this place. It’s one for the foodies that appreciate homemade, high quality authentic American food in an already overly saturated market. Spotless food, service, and Southern hospitality.
