PORTLAND | Stumptown Coffee Roasters Stumptown Coffee Roasters opened in Portland in 1999 and are part of the third wave coffee movement. They are considered pioneers in the coffee scene in the USA and are one of the key players that has been involved in improving the standard and understanding of coffee in the USA. Stumptown are well known for their ethical business practices, focus on quality and relationships with coffee growers.
Instead of buying in bulk, Stumptown’s “Green Team” directly buy beans from the growers. In fact, they might visit an individual farm up to 3 times in one year in order to maintain the relationship and make sure that they’re on top of everything that’s going on at the farm. It’s not just talk either – quite often the prices paid to growers are well above market rates to ensure that the growers can make a good living and innovate and develop their own processes. What this means for you, apart from the buzz you get from knowing that you’re supporting an ethical company, is that the coffee that hits your taste buds is fantastic.
Stumptown beans are used in many of Portland’s best cafes, and they run 4 cafes of their own where you can get coffee brewed using every type of brewing method imaginable. If you see that a place serves Stumptown Coffee, there’s a good chance that they care about the brew they’re serving you. The address provided below is for the Division store, which is the original store that kicked everything off in 1999. The other locations are great too however.
