MELBOURNE | I was going for a walk through Preston the other day, and noticed a cake shop, Sutsa, that I’d not seen before. What particularly caught my attention was a sign at the front of the shop, advertising home cooked meals.

I popped inside and, next to the display of delicious looking cakes, was a menu full of Malaysian favourites. What was the story behind it all? I had to know.

I spoke to owner Amanda, who told me that she’d started baking cakes in 2009 at home, swapping her training as a midwife to instead become a qualified pastry chef. Amanda opened Sutsa in Fairfield in 2016, and moved to to the current Preston location in August this year. Explains why I thought it was new!

Amanda’s parents, who are from Malaysia, are both semi-retired chefs, with over 30 years of cooking experience across Melbourne (they ran Rasa Melaka in Greensborough and Dragon House in Rosanna). They were getting a bit bored during lockdown, so decided to get into the kitchen at Sutsa to cook up home style Malaysian dishes. Enter, Sutsa Home Cooked Meals.

Amanda told me that locals have been really receptive to this side hustle, and are loving the food. Amanda’s dad is loving cooking his favourite dishes for others once again, and Amanda and her sister are really happy to see other people enjoy his food.

I enjoyed the Hainanese Chicken Rice, Char Kueh Teow, and Malaysian Curry Laksa. All brilliant versions of three of my favourites.

The family is planning on keeping the home cooked meals going for a while, so you’ll still be able to enjoy them once lockdown is over. You can order online or in store for pick up, or for delivery via USKU.
