LONDON | Tabun Kitchen is a Palestinian restaurant that’s opened recently, which aims to brings an upscale take on Jerusalem street food to London. Set in the heart of Soho, the name of the restaurant is inspired by the traditional clay tabun oven, in which many Palestinian dishes are baked. The restaurant is the brainchild of Hanan Kattan, an entrepreneur and film producer of Palestinian origin who grew up in Jordan.
Tabun Kitchen has an extensive menu and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast options include Za’atar Manaeesh (flatbread topped with spices, tomatoes, cucumber, labaneh and olives and baked in the tabun oven, being a Middle Eastern take on pizza), as well as the ever popular Shakshukha, which combines baked eggs, tomatoes and peppers. Lunch options include falafel and chicken salads served with sumac and Tabun’s house made dressing.
We opted to visit for dinner, and from the moment we walked inside the staff were very friendly, extremely helpful, and happy to answer any questions we had. We started our meal with the Jerusalem falafel, which was served with a tahini-tossed salad. The falafel was delicious and left us wanting more, with a soft interior and not at all oily, exterior with just the right amount of crunch.
For mains, we opted for the Musakhan chicken (shredded marinated chicken served with caramelised onions in flatbread and topped with pine nuts) and Fatet Jaj chicken (shredded roast chicken served on a bed of rice, topped with roasted pine nuts and with hummus and chilli sauce on the side) with a portion of fries sprinkled with Za’atar spices. We would recommend the Fatet Jaj chicken in a heartbeat. The chicken was cooked beautifully – nice and moist with a nicely balanced flavour explosion with each bite.
Overall, we were very impressed with the food and service at Tabun Kitchen, and would happily visit again. The only criticism we really had was that the restaurant didn’t push the boundaries enough. We love Middle Eastern food, and hope to see Tabun differentiate themselves more with creativity as they become more established.
