MELBOURNE | Tallboy & Moose is a Preston from duo Dan “Tallboy” Hall and Canadian Steve “Moose” Germain. They met in 2012 while both working at Moon Dog Brewery, and soon after started a side project Make Beer, which saw them brew and sell small batch, single keg beers in 2014 and 2015, all while working their days jobs. The Make Beer Experience confirmed that this was what they wanted to be doing with their lives, and in 2016 they launched their own fully fledged brewery, Tallboy & Moose.
The brewery and brewpub is located in a former warehouse and very much feels like a warehouse when you walk inside. That’s not to say that it’s not welcoming though. To one side is the bar, and dotted throughout the large venue is an assortment of tables, seats, stools, and couches. There’s a ping pong table which is free for people to use, a baby change room, a play area for children, and even a fire place which gets used when the temperature drops. It all makes for a fun, vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere.
There are eight beer taps behind the bar, featuring a few of Tallboy & Moose’s core range beers, some seasonal and rare release beers, and a rotating selection of beers from other local breweries that they team are currently enjoying. If you can’t decide what you want, a tasting paddle will get you a pick of a few. We recommend starting with the Cookie Brown, a tasty brown ale with notes of dark fruits and vanilla. For something punchier, try the Double Coolade, the breweries take of the on-trend hazy and juicy New England IPA, and one of the best local versions of the style we’ve tried. Also do keep an eye out for any experimental beers that might be on.
Food is an assortment of interesting dishes with no real common theme other than it tastes good and goes well with beer. Think things like Chili Beef Cheesy Chips with charcoal smoked chili beef, cheddar, Dorito crumbs, mustard, and sour cream, Charcoal Lamb Chops with smoked yoghurt and pomegranate, and a Smoked Beetroot and Stout Curry with kaffir lime and coconut rice.
If you decide you want to take some beer home, Tallboy & Moose is one of the few venues in Melbourne that has a ‘cannimal’ – a canning machine which allows for any of the beers on tap to be put into 1 litre cans on demand.
