Tarago River Cheese Company, Neerim South

NEERIM SOUTH | Tarago River Cheese Company is a Gippsland based producer of some very delicious cheeses. They operate their own free-range farm with over 400 dairy cows, and regularly rotate their crops with the seasons. So you know that you’re getting the freshest, highest quality product around.

The exact cheeses produced at any given time are driven by the seasons, giving rise to the term “farmhouse” cheese. The result is cheese that you’ll want to be trying if you’re in the area.

You can visit the factory to purchase direct on Fridays from 11:00 am to 4:00pm. On offer are whole, half, and quarter wheels, and a few tasting packs. You can also purchase the cheese packs on the “Click For Vic” website. For smaller servings, you can find cheese wedges at local independent grocers.

I highly recommend one of the tasting packs, but if you can only purchase one cheese, my favourite is the “Jensen’s Red”. Named after cheese maker Laurie Jensen, is an intense, full flavoured wash rind cheese that continues to mature and develop long past it’s best before date.
