NIKITI | Most visitors to Nikiti stick to the main, central waterfront section when looking for a bite to eat. As is the case with any beach front tourist spot, the quality of food options here are, let’s say, mixed. Just a few streets up from the water, and about a 15 minute drive out of the centre of town, however, you’ll find a gem in Taverna Sonia.
This family-run joint has been serving up delicious traditional Greek taverna fare since 1977. No big concept, just great versions of the classics made using top quality local produce. They take particular pride in their seafood, which is outstanding. The grilled octopus, fava bean dip, and lightly battered and fried calamari are particularly delicious.
The wine list showcases Greek producers, with a particular focus on regional, independent winemakers. A bottle of Malagousia from Ktima Gerovassiliou, just an hour’s drive from the restaurant, is highly recommended. It pairs perfectly with the fresh seafood at Taverna Sonia.
The place is popular with locals (and Germans, supposedly because of a single article in a German newspaper over a decade ago), so book ahead if you plan on eating there.
