MELBOURNE | Ever wanted to drink in a stranger’s lounge room? Perhaps not, but the The Alderman in Brunswick East comes pretty close to replicating that feeling, except by the end of the night you’ll feel like the lounge room belongs to you and everyone else in the venue.
The front bar feels like an old fashioned bar, with a small wooden bar and a few seats, head through the door and you reach the section that feels like a lounge room, complete with fireplace and creaky staircase. Keep heading along the narrow space and you reach the outdoor courtyard – now you’re in someone’s backyard rather than lounge room. This building surely was a house at some stage in its life. The courtyard is very popular with locals all year round, and is very quaint with its string of fairy lights keeping the space lit. You can even bring your dog if you want.
The drinks list is short and sweet – no extensive taps and bottles of craft beers (that’s what the Alehouse down the road is for) but rather a focused selection of quality, accessible beer, wine and spirits, and all of the classic cocktails.
There’s no food on offer here, but you’re more than welcome to order some fantastic Sicilian food from Bar Idda next door and bring it in with you.
No pretension, no trends, no attitude. Just good drinks in a welcoming, homely space. Let’s hope this is a part of rapidly developing Brunswick East that never changes.
