MELBOURNE | At The Catch (stylised as @ The Catch) is a local fish, chip and burger restaurant catering to residential families in surrounding Carnegie. Humble by nature yet diverse in their offerings, this family-friendly destination is all about giving back to the community, whether it is through their lovingly prepared food, respectful and laid back interactions with customers, or their joyous involvement in local school fetes, sporting teams or kindergarten events.

Owner Kostas is no stranger to the hospitality industry, having many years of experience contributing to the establishment, growth and design of cafes, restaurants and other venues around Melbourne. In the year 2010, Kostas made the decision to retire from his life’s work and lead a more simple life. However, this didn’t last long, with his energetic personality and passion for food steering him back into the industry through the creation of At The Catch, where his love for family, food and community collides, and can be shared with even more people.

Working alongside members of his family, Kostas credits their efficient working processes and systems to their respect for, and trust in, each other, as well as in their passion for what they do. Mirroring their simple yet purposeful approach to the menu, the design of At The Catch is inspired by their Greek heritage, with specialty caricature artwork drawn on the walls to elicit a sense of fun, love and tradition… all things that underpin the work that Kostas and his team does. Wanting nothing more than to be a local dine-in and take-away destination, with UberEats and Deliveroo also offered, their modesty similarly resonates in the no-fuss wooden tables and benches laden around the venue, with blue cushions breaking up the colour scheme, and an indoor courtyard out the back providing a naturally aesthetic ambience.

When it comes to the quality of the food, it all starts with the suppliers. Only working with sustainable and local suppliers, seafood is sourced from a combination of Anassis, Lefkas and Ash Bros Food Services, whilst meat is sourced from a local butcher down the road. Once these proteins are obtained, everything else that goes into the creation, preparation and delivery of the food is done in-house, by Kostas and his dedicated team.

Their seafood can be grilled or fried, with the latter option delivering an audibly crunchy batter that will make your fellow diners jealous. The oil used in their commercial fryers are changed daily, thus resulting in a clean, fresh-tasting product that is devoid of any oiliness when it arrives on the table. Potato cakes are made from scratch, with a thick layer of potato encased within a perfectly crispy batter. Vibrant salads are made fresh daily, whilst their variety of taco fillings also includes tender, char-grilled calamari layered amongst lettuce, coleslaw and a herb aioli. Their burger bar is not to be missed either, with a whole page of choices whose quirky names pay tribute to things like the Sombrero, Top Hat and the Bowler.

Kostas’ experience in the catering industry contributes to the creativity of some of their rotating specials, including the Mother’s Day special, Prawn Saganaki. A twist on the traditional Greek dish, freshly-cooked prawns lay amongst a feta and tomato sugo concoction, bursting with intense flavours that will compel you to soak up the remaining sauce with the accompanying toasted bread so as not to waste any of its deliciousness.

Certainly more than meets the eye, At The Catch proves itself to be more than just a fish and chip shop. Its exciting array of menu items delivers a modern take on traditional Greek flavours and familiar Australian dishes, with an unrivalled sense of love and care put into each item that emerges from their kitchen. Although food is a significant component at this local eatery, the emphasis on family and community similarly reins paramount, thus identifying them as a unique player in today’s saturated hospitality industry.
