MELBOURNE | The Crux & Co is South Melbourne’s hottest new brunch spot, just a stone’s throw away from popular café Kettle Black. Located on Albert Road, on the ground level of The Emerald apartment building, this new cafe and patisserie has achieved the perfect combination for success, with killer coffee, stylish interior design, meticulous presentation and most importantly, delicious food.

Designed by Architects EAT (8-Bit, Tetsujin Emporium), The Crux & Co features a minimalist, modern interior and cutting edge graphics. Natural light and hanging greenery paired with wood panelling, marble surfaces and copper/rose gold details complete the look.

Oats in the morning are my absolute favourite; so I naturally went for the Porridge, made with rolled oats and topped with honey lemon rhubarb, strawberry compote and edible flowers. Such a satisfying and tasty dish, The Crux & Co has managed to take a clever twist on a simple breakfast favourite.

After drooling over numerous snaps on Instagram before our visit, we couldn’t resist ordering the French toast, with creative toppings including mixed berries, nuts, natural honeycomb, mascarpone and vanilla fairy floss. Visually a work of art, this impressive, Instaworthy dish does not compromise on flavour. The French toast provides the perfect amount of sweetness to satisfy that craving, making it the ideal dish for some weekend indulgence.

If the sweeter breakfast options don’t take your fancy, The Crux & Co provides the perfect healthy Vegetarian Breakfast of eggs, grilled asparagus, grilled kale, feta, avocado, sauteed mushrooms and spinach on sourdough toast. Or if you fancy something a little more unique, why not go for the Bisque Benedict, with tiger prawns, poached eggs and a lobster bisque hollandaise, served on squid ink toast.

One element of The Crux & Co, which is pretty much impossible to bypass, is the stunning patisserie desserts cabinet featuring head pastry chef Louise MK Lee’s (ex Brunetti) creations. Think branded, perfectly iced éclairs, cakes and macaroons available in every flavour and colour imaginable. Moreover, The Crux & Co offers a range of fresh savoury and sweet croissants, with flavours including the oh-so trendy Matcha. For those looking for a drinks, coffee is a Five Senses house blend and available black or white espresso as well as a variety of filter options.

The Crux & Co has introduced some serious competition onto the Melbourne brunch scene and we won’t be surprised if there are lines out the door very soon.
