LONDON | The owners of The Culpeper, a gastropub in Whitechapel, have turned their rooftop space into a fully functioning greenhouse, growing their own vegetables, fruit and herbs to be used in the downstairs kitchen. And amongst all of it lies a hidden bar serving bespoke botanical cocktails as well as a few tables underneath the creeping vines where guests can dig into some of this hyper-locally sourced produce. The Culpeper offers a completely natural wine list from small growers the world over, a selection of beers ranging from continental draught lagers through locally brewed and bottled beers. The food menu is concise, just one page, and features refined takes on pub classics with various influences from around the world.
The rooftop space offers very little room for people and the food is a bit pricey, but if you’re looking to treat yourselves to a fresh and modern lunch or dinner then it is well worth booking in advance and spending a little extra.
Do note that the rooftop hours are shorter than the pub’s full hours, but even if you can’t make it to the rooftop, there’s a lot to recommend about the pub inside too – the same food and drinks are offered, in a more traditional pub atmosphere.
