LONDON | We were recently invited to visit The Don, a modern European restaurant which is situated in the heart of the City of London by Bank. The restaurant is located in the former headquarters of the Sandeman Port and Sherry Company, in which George Sandeman blended and bottled his barrels of fortified wine. The restaurant reflects this history, but combines it with modernity and a multi-award winning wine list and exceptional food.

We visited the restaurant on a Friday evening after work. Given that it was early evening when we visited, the restaurant was not very busy but that meant that we could take our time when choosing which dishes to order. The restaurant’s menu is a modern European one with a French slant. Indeed, the wine list features a number of well-known French wines.

For starters, we chose the tart of confit salmon, served with watercress cream and wild herbs, and the crab and caviar served with blinis and marinated cucumber. The salmon tart was not what we were expecting when we were given the dish, but was delicious. The crab and caviar was beautifully presented on shiny scallop shells and was also very tasty.

For main dishes, we chose the herb crusted monkfish tail, served with escabeche vegetables and bouillabaisse sauce, and the grilled lobster seasoned with garlic and herb butter and served with hand cut chips and a mixed salad. Our favourite dish of the evening was the lobster, which was cooked to perfection. We had ordered a half lobster, but definitely thought we should have ordered a whole one.

For dessert, we chose a selection of sorbet ice creams and the mango and passion fruit mousse. Again, the presentation of the mousse was excellent and we savoured each bite.

Overall, The Don Restaurant is a great place to visit for business lunches and dinners, given its location and quality of the food.
