PERTH | The Dutch Trading Company is a Victoria Park gem from the people behind The Classroom and Lucky Chan’s Laundry & Noodlebar. The inspiration here is “the spirit of the Dutch Empire that for 200 years led the world in exploration, trade, culture and art”, and traversed the western coast of Australia before the British set up shop here. Don’t come to The Dutch Trading Company expecting a Dutch themed experience though. Sure there are a few trinkets dotted around that allude to the name, but what this place is really about is craft beer.
Andrew and Sasha Bennett have set up a bar that offers 18 rotating taps of craft beer, featuring an assortment of styles from brewers near and far. Looking at the live tap list while this is being written gives a good example of the diversity of beer on offer. BrewDog Elvis Juice (Scotland), 8 Wired Tropidelic (New Zealand), Moor Envy (England), Modus Operandi Pale Ale (New South Wales), Victory Brewing Company Vital (USA), and Eagle Bay Single Batch Black IPA (Western Australia) are just six of the interesting beers on the list.
Tasting paddles are available if you want to try a few things, and the knowledgeable staff are always happy to talk about the beers and guide you towards something you’ll likely enjoy.
If there’s nothing on tap that tickles your fancy, the bottle list is where you’ll want to be looking, and with over 300 bottles available at any given time, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding something that you want to drink. The Dutch Trading Company also has a CANimal system set up, which means that any of the beers on tap can be canned on the spot for you to take home.
Food is gastropub fare that’s designed to be enjoyed with beer, and features items like. ‘dirty fries’, pretzels, fried chicken, lamb ribs, burgers and a few desserts. You can enjoy your food and drinks in the light and airy front bar, or in the cozier back room.
