MELBOURNE | The Fox Hotel appears from the outside to be an old school Collingwood pub, but it has a decidedly modern ethos to the way it operates. There are several rooms in which to enjoy a drink or a meal (including a small, dog-friendly outdoor courtyard), and live music most nights, featuring local bands and DJs playing music from an array of genres.
Publicans Bridie Harrop, Clodagh Harris and Tracy Walsh have strived to make the Fox Hotel the kind of place where anyone can feel welcome, and they’ve certainly succeeded. Walk inside and you’ll see people of all ages, sexes, and walks of life just chilling out and having a good time.
The drinks menu is almost exclusively Australian, bar the occasional overseas option here and there. Across the 11 taps you’ll find beers from local independent breweries like Old Wives Ales, 4 Pines, and Cavalier, while the short wine list features enough quality and choice to keep most punters happy. If there’s nothing on tap that tickles your fancy, you’ll find almost 100 different beers in bottles and cans in the fridges. Food includes pub classics like parmas, steak, and burgers done right, along with options for vegetarians and vegans. Check out crowd favourites like the Vegetarian Burrito, Roasted Pork Belly, and Bug & Prawn Gyoza.
Some say that the traditional pub is dying, but The Fox Hotel is proof that if you make an effort to get the important things right, there’s more than enough demand out there to make it work.
