SAN DIEGO | The Hopping Pig is a Gaslamp gastropub with a focus on small batch craft beer featuring 32 rotating taps of mostly West Coast breweries, along with craft breweries around the world. It’s a smallish venue with a welcoming atmosphere and well located screens showing live sports.
There are some really good beers on tap here, including several seasonal and one-off beers from breweries like Goose Island, Green Flash, Belching Beaver, Stone, and Avery. Even more impressive is the fact that The Hopping Pig dedicates several of its taps to beers from smaller breweries who aren’t as well represented as the big boys. The offering of tasting flights means trying a few different beers is a very viable option. Staff are very knowledgeable about the beers on tap too.
The food menu focuses on pork inspired dishes and pub fare – burgers, flatbread sandwiches, salads, tacos and the like. Even if you’re not looking for a feed, we highly recommend the garlic Parmesan fries, which provide a salty, spiced, umami hit are are surprisingly addictive.
The crowd here isn’t what you’d call craft beer-heads, and we think it’s great that a bar like The Hopping Pig shows such dedication to quality craft beer, and introducing it to a crowd who might not be too familiar with a lot of what’s on tap.
